Ghisallo bike rental services : the experience of Mr. Dean.

In the past saturday we have make a drop-off by a long-term bike rental service (hire lasted 4 months) .

Mr. Dean is our last customer, coming from USA for his holidays, have rent a big quality road bike (with drop bar) and have pay a very good rate !

our bike at work !

During 4 months Mr. Dean have explored north Italian country, around Garda Lake, Como Lake, Giro di Lombardia bicycle race path (Bellagio and Ghisallo) , Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto region, Italian Alps, Julien Alps in Slovenia and Croatian country.

I would like write about Ghisallo hill, (a part by Tour of Lombardy's Itinerary):
Colle del Ghisallo is a mountain pass road that connects the upper part of Valassina Larian Triangle. The point of the pass, at an altitude of 754 m above sea level, is located near Magreglio. A few meters from the pass is a small church, the sanctuary of the Madonna del Ghisallo. Its name comes from a certain Ghisallo which in medieval times in that place was attacked by bandits and made a vow to Our Lady to build a church in his honor if he survived.
The ascent of Ghisallo (from the north) is traditionally traveled by the Tour of Lombardy and was even more times into the course of the Tour of Italy. For this reason, the Madonna del Ghisallo is especially venerated by cyclists, and in 1948 Pope Pius XII proclaimed the universal patroness of cyclists. Occasion a torch votive, blessed by the Pope, was brought from Rome to the shrine by a relay team of cyclists, the last two torchbearers were Bartali and Coppi.
Next to the shrine stands the Museum of cycling (see below) in the forecourt there is a monument to the rider.

A steep slope of Ghisallo :
You can climb to the shrine from two sides. When they say "Ghisallo" or "Madonna del Ghisallo" cyclists almost always means the road that climbs from Bellagio (north side), making the climb more challenging.
From the junction of highway 583, exit from Bellagio, it presents a stretch of about 4 km climb, followed by about 3 km in the plane with short stretches of downhill, and then again approximately 1.5 km climb to the Sanctuary. The height difference is slightly less than 500 meters, the crossing point is at 754 m above sea level. I have an uphill slope fairly constant with an average just under 9% and peaks up to 14%, include the flat segment, the average gradient is 5.5% approximately. There are many hairpin species in the final stretch. The road is almost entirely surrounded by woods. The best professionals are able to make the journey in less than 20 minutes (Paolo Bettini took about 19'30 "in the Giro di Lombardia 2005).
A more demanding variant is known as "Superghisallo. It starts from Bellagio and follow the main road to Guello (where it ends on the first uphill stretch) and here you turn right towards Monte San Primo and go uphill for 4-5 km to a height of 969, in area Plan Ranch, where the crossroad, turn left and you reach the Piazzale del Santuario downhill.
The other side (south side), which reaches Magreglio Canzo through grass and Ace (a variant reaches Canzo coming from Pusiano and another for salt Onno Valbrona rejoining Asso above), goes much more smoothly, present major difficulties (slope up 10%) only in the last mile.
From Ace can also climb to the Colma of Sormano (altitude 1124 m) along the main road (about 9 km with an average gradient of around 8%) or through the grueling Wall Sormano recently resurfaced.

The Museum of cycling
For many decades there is between the champions of cycling (mostly Italian, but not only) the practice of donating their memorabilia to the Shrine of the Ghisallo: These include, for example, bicycles used by Bartali, Coppi and Merckx in their victories in the Tour de France, the bicycle used by special Moser for the record time, and different mesh pink, yellow and rainbow.
In the nineties, these relics were now so numerous that find no place in the small church: it was therefore conceived the project of a museum of cycling, to be erected beside the shrine. Chair the committee for the realization of the museum was named Fiorenzo Magni. After several delays, the museum was finally inaugurated on 14 October 2006, at the Giro di Lombardia in 2006, a ceremony which was attended by several samples of the present and past.
The museum is spread over three floors and includes a multimedia collection of material on cycling. The most important relics in any case continue to be exposed in the church sanctuary.

Arquà Petrarca : In the heart of the Colli Euganeithe route of the poet Francesco Petrarch

The proposed itinerary refers to the route of the poet Francesco Petrarch when he went to his house in the Colli Euganei from padua.
The excursionis very rich in tourist attractions and users cycle paths and secondary roads with little traffic in places on unmade surfaces.

From the Roman Excavations of Montegrotto Terme we head towards teh Battaglia canal, on the top of whose embankment runsa pleasant cycle path. The first thing to emerge along the road is Villa Obizzi, more commonly know ad the castle of the Catajo for the way in which this noble residence of Pio Enea I of the Obizzi, military leader of the Serenissima, had it copnstructed in military style; the villa has over 350 rooms.

After the castle, an unexpected scene on the canal opens : on a wide stretch of the waterway we find moored some boats; this is the navigation lock, celebrated because it allows the boats to negotiate a rise in water level of ever seven metres.

Meanwhile, in the background there is Battaglia Terme, the inner city is characterised by a special arrangement of the houses on the waterfront, whit its original stepped bridge in Venetian style and the hydraulic guardhouse in the neighbourhood of which stand mills, a hammer for wrought iron work, a saw and a paper mill, contructed to exploit the hydraulic energy released by the fall in water level.

Pedalling again along the cycle path we stop anew in the area of a tourist poster that illustres the hydraulic details of the canal bridge of Rivella and admire the splendid country landscape of the Valli Selvatiche , comprising the Villa Selvatico-Sartori that stands on the Sant'Elena hill, the surrounding fertile countryside and the pronounced backdrop of the Colli Euganei.
Having left the lift bridge, one discovers, hidden by an elegant Italian style garden, the beautiful Villa Emo, the work of Vincenzo Scamozzi.

The long straight stretch ends in the port of Monselice, from where the visit to the inner city begins, an authentic jewel case of art, history, archaeology and nature.
From the walled city one turns into a beautiful little-used foothill road on a slight incline that turns around Ricco mount.

Having traversed an uneven plain the hamlet of Arquà Petrarca appears, to whose name is tied of the poet (Petrarch). The itinerary leads to the large square in front of the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta where the monumental tomb of the poet is conserved.
Petrarch's house is to be found in the upper part of village, I advise you to reach it on foot because of the steep slopes.

Having left the hamlet of Arquà, for about two kilometres one travels along a road that can be busy during weekends and holidays and it ends at the Lago della Costa, a natural basin fed by thermal springs.

The retourn to Battaglia Terme is on unmade roads surrounded by a veru striking landscape.
From the hamlet of Monticelli we admire the picturesque Villa Renier, built on the summit of a rise and surrounded by a high wall and at the foot of the mount of Lispida Villa Italia.
From Monticelli we suggest to follow the route to Valsanzibio ad visit the beautiful and historical garden of Villa Barbarigo.

In Battaglia Terme we discovered the road we set out on and this way we retourn to Montegrotto Terme.

Abano Terme. Orchards, parks and gardens : easy bike ride.

This easy bike ride start in the heart of the spa town and forms a ring around itself, in this way allowing admire the elements of rural scenery : from the agrarian arrangements to traditional cultivations, from the houses of hired hands to the gentlemanly Veneto villas. The route follows cycle paths, secondary roads and countryside lanes.

In the Abano Terme we leave from the Piazza della Repubblica and skirt round Villa Piave, a rare and beautiful example of Liberty architecture with an early 1900s garden. This asymmetric building with exuberant plasterwork is surrounded by thivk vegetation composed of evergreen and exotic plants.
Travelling along Via Mazzini one reaches the entrance to Villa Bassi Rathgeb, home of the Civic Museum : the internal rooms host cultural exhibitions and demonstrations while the park is the site of an important horse-riding competition.
Turning into Via Appia Monterosso one reaches the Duomo with a Romanesque bell-tower named after San Lorenzo Martire.
A few hundred metres further on one can admire the sixteenth century Villa Malipiero Rigoni with its attached oratory and magnificient pigeon loft.
Resuming the route we next reach the Villa Trevisan-Savioli, now the seat of the Sartori Mask Museum.

Opposite us we find a beautiful farmhouse from the end of the 1700s with the habitable part juxtaposed with a porticoed stall.
I invite you to carefully observe the building details : the wooden shutters and the faceted chimneypot.
They are examples of traditional Veneto architecture that are becoming rare. The suggestive secondary roads cross cornersof the countryside enclosed by bushes or more rarely by rows of trees and vines as was used in the typical Paduan agrarian system, which used to present the profile of the fields as a curvature of a "mule's back". Soon one returns to the spa centre and crosses it until stopping in front of the entrance gateway to the park situated on the hill of Montirone.
This high ground of travertine (clear and porous rock) used as a public garden is different from the other Euganean hills for its special geological genesis ; it is in fact the only one to have originated from the calcareous sediment produced by the abundant thermal springs that gushed out freely until the middle of the last century. One starts pedalling again on the cycle path in the direction of Monteortone to newly surround oneself in the agrarian landscape of Abano, here enriched by the variety of shapes of the Colli Euganei. Set apart from all the hilly group, the Ortone and Rosso mounts are covered by a wild woodland mantle that contrast with the gentleness of the surrounding countryside.
Having reached the hamlet of Monterosso it is possible to contemplate a relaxing stop in the public park of Villa Monzino, called the Bembiana.
Taking up the bicycle again one proceeds surrounded by the silence of the countryside to the hamlet of Feriole where we find the Villa Foscolo that takes its name from the famous writer that composed here his first masterpiece "the last letters of Jacopo Ortis". Of a special interest there is also the nearby complex of Milan, a rare example of a rural courtyard built in neoclassical style.
At the side of the votive niche dedicated to Saint Anthony one turns to the right into Via Pezzolo at the end of wich there is a convenient cycle path that takes us to Villa Bassi Rathgeb.

Around Pauda by bicycle... customized itineraries with logistic support !

Even if these are no longer waterways for flat bottomed boats as used to be case, whoever experiences river and canal journeys has the impression of entering the area by main door; identifying oneself with the "boatmen of yesteryear", it is possible with my rental bike shop to travel along many embankments and take in the Paduan scenery, understanding in this way the existing relationship between inhabited centres and natural resources.

The almost exclusively flat morphology of the land and the mildness of the climate (the number of rain in a year average only 80!) are another two factors that flavour cycle touring in Padua Province in every season.

The Padua town are connected with the natural sceneries and Terme Euganee with 12 suggested journeys and in 2 categories :
  • cycling excursions (circuits that commit the tourist to half a day)
  • cycle touring itineraries (routes that require a propensity for pedalling)
All the journeys have been designed to more or less develop around a circuit, that is with departure and arrival points.
With my rental bike services we can customize your itinerary and deliver the bikes (pick-up or drop off) in all points of your journey, between Italian regions, towns and provinces.

An example : you can start your trip from Padua, go to Garda Lake or dolomites, Pisa or Chianti region, take the train with our bike or request logistic support for transfer the bike and your luggages around the paths of your itinerary.

We must only organize your cycling trip or excursions !

We love your passion !

thank you very mouch to local tourist office for all informations contained in his guide.

Padua and its Province by bicycle

From the source to the lake, from the lagoon to the river, from the wood to the multitude of cultivated fields : not many lands in temperate climates can boast of such a great variety of ecosystems as that of Padua province.
The work of man in the same area that is more or less a plain if you exclude the isolated microcosm of the Colli Euganei, has produced an exceptionally rich set of historical, cultural and artistic examples : archeological evidence of the ancient Venetians and Romans, castles and medieval hamlets, Venetian villas and Renaissance abbeys.
I would like propose to take the tourists to discover various surroundings and cultural roots of this territory from the perspective with my rental bike shop.
This means of locomotion is ideal for thise who interpret by slow motion and thereby in close contact with the environment.
The choice of bike has been dictated by the fact that it allows one to enter the territory in a respectful, silent and ecological way and thus encourage tourist to immerse themselves in their surroundings and become co-players.
The suggested itineraries that I will publish step by step in this blog are within the capacity of every cyclist, there is no need to be a young athlete to experience and active holiday; but it is simply sufficient to maintain a youthful desire for discovery and rent my working bicycle (with many useful accessories) that fits your own stature, to begin the journey.
The land within the province of Padua offer great opportunities for the cycling tourist : for example the province is criss-crossed by navigable waterways over 150 km (paths for your cycling tour).

Have a nice holidays.
